Nigerian troops rescue 200 girls from Sambisa forest

Nigerian troops have rescued 200 girls from the Sambisa Forest, the notorious hideout of the insurgent group, Boko Haram, and their last known stronghold, the defence headquarters said Tuesday.

The girls were found Tuesday afternoon alongside 93 women who were also rescued, the military said.

The military however said it could not confirm whether the girls were students abducted more than a year ago from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State.

The Chibok girls were abducted by Boko Haram militants on April 14, 2014.

The Director of Defence Information, Major Gen. Chris Olukolade said:

Military . Director of Defence Info Maj Gen. Chris Olukolade“Troops this afternoon rescued 200 girls & 93 women from Sambisa Forest. We cannot confirm if the #ChibokGirls are in this group,” the military said in a series of tweets.

APC reverses decision on barring AIT from covering Buhari

APC reverses Gen. Buhari’s decision on AIT barring the TV station from covering the president-elect’s activities, and said all accredited media are free to cover the President-elect’s activities.

AIT, a television network, is owned by High Chief Raymond Dokpesi – whose TV station aired divisive and hate-filled political campaigns and personal attacks on behalf of the PDP, against the APC, APC Presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, APC leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu – as manifested in sponsored and paid interviews aired by Femi Fani Kayode and the “Lion of Bourdillon” documentaries.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reversed the controversial decision taken by President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to bar the Africa Independent Television (AIT) from covering his activities.

The party said all accredited media organizations in the country, including the AIT, are free to cover the activities of the president elect.

AIT journalists were on Monday denied access to Gen. Buhari’s transition office in the Defence House complex in Abuja when they showed up to cover his official engagements.

The president-elect’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, cited “family and security concerns” as the reasons for the decision.

Garba Shehu said:

Buhari . Garba Shehu . Buhari's spokesman“AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Gen. Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.

We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter, but for now the station has been asked to stay aside, because like I said there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standard”

– Garba Shehu, Spokesman of the President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari

The APC in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said the incoming Buhari Administration would not discriminate against any media organization, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls.

The statement however enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.

Lai Mohammed said

APC . Lai Mohammed“There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect”

– Lai Mohammed, APC National Publicity Secretary
