Damaturu still under siege by Boko Haram: Sitrep unknown

Contrary to reports that the massive attack on Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, has been quelled or contained by the Nigerian military – the situation is still fluid. Latest reports reaching my newsroom say the insurgent attack by the dreaded Boko Haram is still ongoing in Damaturu.

The town is still under siege as the Boko Haram fighters, numbering more than 100, are still holding some areas of the embattled capital of Yobe state. Security forces are fully mobilized in the defense of the town, manning checkpoints with the streets fully deserted. Some residents, many of them civilians are trapped in their homes, afraid to even flee the fighting. This is because it was a dawn attack on the town, which took the residents and the military forces stationed in the town by surprise.

Information and situation reports are unknown as we published by approx 4:40 pm Monday, because the battle for Damaturu is still ongoing. Eyewitness accounts say occasionally, military helicopters and jets will stream across the Damaturu airspace signalling an ongoing air assault to regain control by the Nigerian military.

The relative peace of Damaturu the Yobe state capital in the northeast of Nigeria was broken when suspected Boko Haram fighters stormed Damaturu in the early hours of Monday.

Eyewitness accounts say a Nigerian Air Force jet (photo: NAF jet) was seen over the airspace of Damaturu, engaging the Boko Haram fighters on the ground.

Reports from Yobe say the insurgents stormed Damaturu from Gujba road, south east of the state capital and attacked and sacked a mobile police base.

Residents were woken up by sporadic gunfire and explosions with the invaders shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) and shooting at random.

Up to the time of publishing this news story there was no official statement from the Yobe police command, the military or the Yobe state government on the insurgent attack or the level of casualties. Most of the residents in the area of attack have fled to neighboring communities.

Damaturu is a Local Government Area in Yobe State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Damaturu, the State capital.

Yobe is one of three northeastern states of Nigeria under a state of emergency along with Borno and Adamawa.

The situation report on ground zero is still unknown . . .

Updated: Preliminary reports from the Boko Haram siege is trickling from Damaturu, the Yobe  state capital. The insurgents torched some buildings of Bukar Abba Ibrahim University (BAIU) the state owned radio station, telecom mast and a primary school in the early hours on Monday.

The insurgents employed explosives and other Improvised Explosive Devises (IEDs) as they advanced into Damaturu.
