Breakaway! | Or secession?

The war songs had degenerated to the extent that for the first time people started discussing ‘war plans’ openly as if they had commanded troops before in battle. Many turned to latter day soldiers or generals, even Field Marshals; more like soldiers of fortune if you ask me. Living with my uncle in the ivory tower stood me in good stead as I stood or sat (non-participant observer) amongst people of different political, social and intellectual persuasions. Some were intellectuals who used their minds creatively and uncle Goddy chatted with them happily; others were non-intellectuals who feigned scholarship and got on his nerves; yet others were people more akin to the chattering nabobs of the orient. The latter’s suggestions were plainly despicable as he puffed more furiously on his pipe and listened to sound that was a disagreeable auditory experience, if nothing else.

It was in this eastern regional environment strewn with hatred for all things Nigerian that the rebellion began in earnest. We were still in the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as mentioned earlier in this book; as the now Major General Yakubu Gowon on May 27, 1967 created 12 states. In response to Gowon’s masterstroke of sneaking in the 12 state-structure on Nigeria and on the eastern region in particular, many easterners added that deft move to the failure of the ‘Aburi Accord.’ Subsequently, the eastern regional government considered both as the last straw that broke the camel’s back. In this hostile scenario which Ojukwu said was occasioned by Gowon’s intransigence, it was either a breakaway or secession, depending on the nomenclature you would have chosen at the time. The eastern regional government chose both and so did yours truly.

On May 30, 1967 Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu fssc the Military Governor of the Eastern Region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria declared the beginning or the start of a very long tortuous journey to statehood that looked uncertain, ab initio. Ojukwu did this before the Eastern Nigerian Consultative Assembly sitting in Enugu and chaired by Dr. Alvan Ikoku.
